Washington. Differences within America's Republican Party regarding the Iran War have now come to the fore. Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers from Michigan and Ashley Hinson, Senate candidate from Iowa, on Monday demanded an early end to the Iran war. Both leaders have previously taken a stance in support of President Donald Trump's powers related to military action in Iran.
The latest statements of both the leaders have come at a time when the prices of gasoline and diesel are increasing in America amid the war and the November mid-term elections are near. In recent days, some other Republican lawmakers have also taken a different stance from Trump regarding military action in Iran.
Ashley Hinson calls for an end to war
Republican Senate candidate Ashley Hinson of Iowa said the people of Iowa should not pay the economic cost of the Iran war. He proposed steps for immediate relief including suspending the gasoline tax, temporarily halting U.S. exports of diesel, expanding the use of E-15 fuel, and restoring the biodiesel tax credit.
Hinson also called for starting a diesel relief program for farmers and truckers. He said that these steps were urgently needed to bring down prices and that the war should be ended successfully and immediately.
This stance is different from his previous voting. According to reports, Hinson had voted against proposals to limit Trump's war powers until last week.
Mike Rogers also changed his stance
Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers from Michigan also called for an early end to the Iran war in his campaign ad released on Monday. He said energy prices may drop when the war ends, but Michigan families can't wait until then.
Rogers proposed suspending state and federal gasoline taxes and a temporary ban on U.S. diesel exports as immediate relief. He argues that availability of more diesel in the domestic market can provide relief to farmers and truck drivers.
Rising fuel prices become a big issue
Fuel prices are becoming a political issue in America amid changes in the stance of Republican leaders. According to Reuters, the price of retail diesel in the US has reached above six dollars a gallon for the first time. Diesel prices have reached record levels due to the impact of fuel supply at the global level.
Democratic rivals have also raised questions about Rogers and Hinson's proposals. Rogers' rival Abdul al-Sayed has questioned his change in stance. Hinson's opponent Josh Turek has said that when there was a chance to vote on limiting war powers, Hinson did not support that proposal.
Republican MPs have already separated from Trump
Rogers and Hinson are not alone among Republican leaders in distancing themselves from Trump over the Iran war. On September 15, seven Republican lawmakers voted with Democrats on a resolution limiting Iran-related war powers in the US House of Representatives. These included Jack Nunn and Marionette Miller-Meeks of Iowa. Both had earlier voted against such proposals.
The House of Representatives passed this proposal by a vote of 220-204. The purpose of the resolution was to impose a requirement of congressional approval on the President's powers to continue military action against Iran.
Thus, the Iran war is no longer just an issue of foreign policy and military action in America. This is also becoming a topic of debate within the Republican Party amid rising fuel prices, the duration of the war, and the upcoming mid-term elections.
