India retained the Asian Games women’s cricket gold medal in emphatic fashion, defeating Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final at Nagoya on Tuesday. Put into bat, India posted a commanding 216 for three in their 20 overs before bowling Sri Lanka out for just 69 in 15.4 overs. Smriti Mandhana led the batting charge with a superb 79, while Shafali Verma made an all-round contribution as India completed a dominant victory.
The triumph gave India their second successive Asian Games gold in women’s cricket. Sri Lanka had been the opposition when India won the inaugural Asian Games cricket gold in Hangzhou in 2023. The two sides had also met in the Women’s Asia Cup final earlier this month, making Tuesday’s contest another major final between familiar rivals. This time, however, India ensured that the match was settled long before the closing stages.
Mandhana provided the foundation for India’s huge total with a composed and authoritative innings. The left-hander combined timing with controlled aggression and anchored the innings while ensuring that India maintained a strong scoring rate. Her 79 gave the Indian middle order the platform to attack in the latter stages and push the total beyond the 200-run mark.
Shafali was equally influential, contributing with both bat and ball. India’s batting depth meant Sri Lanka were under pressure throughout the first innings, with the Indian side able to accelerate without taking excessive risks. The final total of 216 for three left Sri Lanka facing a daunting chase.
The Sri Lankan innings never gathered momentum. India’s bowlers maintained pressure from the opening overs, regularly finding breakthroughs and preventing partnerships from developing. Sri Lanka eventually folded for 69 in 15.4 overs, leaving India with a massive 147-run victory.
The margin of victory underlined India’s superiority on the day. After dominating with the bat, the Indian attack completed the job with an equally disciplined bowling performance. Sri Lanka were unable to cope with the pressure of chasing a huge target in a final against an Indian side that had already shown its strength during the tournament.
