Until now, most users had to buy a data pack with calling even when they didn't need internet. After these new rules issued now, the companies will also have to provide voice and SMS based plans. This will especially benefit consumers who use their smartphones primarily for calling and SMS. TRAI on September 21 amended the Consumer Protection Regulations. It may take some time to implement these new rules. Companies will have to comply with the new provisions generally within 30 days of publication of the notification in the official gazette.
Opportunity for customers to save
The prices of the new voice-SMS plans have not been decided yet. As per the examples given in the reports, if a company's current data recharge plan is priced at Rs.350. So after data deletion only calling and SMS option can cost around 150 to 200 rupees. This means, customers can directly save Rs 150 to Rs 200. The cost and validity of the plan will depend on different companies. According to a recent report, about 71 percent of people have seen their mobile recharge spending increase by 50 to 200 percent in the last year.
