Smartphone Study: 29% Indians resort to rice as soon as the phone falls into water, know what Consumer Report says

Smartphones have become an important part of people's everyday life today. In such a situation, people immediately get worried if the phone falls from their hands or gets wet in water. Before going to the service center, many people try ways to repair the phone at home. A new consumer study has revealed many interesting things related to such habits of Indian Smartphone users and the accidental damage caused to the phone.
This study has been done by Hansa Research for OneAssist. In this report named The Great Indian Smartphone Protection Crisis, people's behavior regarding smartphone use, accidental damages and protection plans has been studied.

82% Indians have had their phones dropped at least once
According to the report, 82 percent people have dropped their smartphone at least once. At the same time, 72 percent consumers experienced some kind of accidental damage.
Slipping of the phone from the pocket or bag was also one of the main reasons for the loss. The share of such cases is said to be around 36 percent.
People's reactions also varied after the phone fell. About 35 percent people said that they felt nervous as soon as the phone fell. At the same time, 24 percent people said that they had an argument or fight with someone due to this incident. Apart from this, 15 percent people even canceled their plans due to smartphone damage.
When the phone got wet in water, 29% people adopted the rice method.
When water gets into the smartphone, many people try home remedies instead of going to the service center immediately. The study revealed that 29 percent of Indians used rice to repair water-damaged smartphones.
Apart from this, about 20 to 32 percent people resorted to tape and other temporary fixes to temporarily handle the broken or damaged phone.
Number of consumers taking protection plan reduced
Despite cases of smartphone damage coming to light, people still show limited interest in the protection plan.
According to the report, 36 percent people have taken a protection plan for their Smartphone at some point or the other, but currently only about 6 to 8 percent consumers have an active protection plan.
In the study, many reasons have been given behind the distance from the Protection Plan. These include lack of adequate information about its price, benefits and people's concern regarding the claim process.
Increasing demand for protection for old smartphones
Important information regarding pre-owned smartphones has also come to light in the consumer study. About 70 percent of consumers believe that protection plan is more important for old smartphones than new phones.
At the same time, about 30 percent people said that if Warranty or Protection Plan is available with the old phone, then they can consider buying a pre-owned Smartphone.

According to the report, about 54 percent people in non-metro areas bought pre-owned smartphones, while in metro cities this figure was about 30 percent.
The need for protection has increased in the era of expensive smartphones.
According to the study, people are now using their smartphones for longer periods than before. On the other hand, with the increase in the price of new Smartphones, the cost of repair if they get damaged is also becoming a big concern for the consumers.
In such a situation, the report points towards the increasing need among Smartphone users regarding Accidental Damage and Protection Plans.
