Researchers at IIT Delhi have achieved an important achievement in promoting Make in India. Researchers at the institute have developed the country's first indigenous micro-graphics processing unit i.e. micro-GPU. It can be used for graphics and display processing in various electronic and digital devices.
The indigenous micro-GPU can be used in dashboard navigators of electric vehicles and e-rickshaws, navigation terminals of fishing boats, educational e-book readers, medical and diagnostic displays and portable handheld gaming devices.
According to researchers, this technology can also open the way for the development of indigenous graphics and display-processing systems in the country. Graphics processing units are widely used in modern electronic hardware, while India is currently dependent on imports for its GPU needs.
The development of micro-GPU in the country can help reduce dependence on imports for graphics processing hardware. Along with this, there is a possibility of boosting domestic technical capacity in electronics manufacturing and semiconductor sector.
This initiative of IIT Delhi is considered an important step towards developing indigenous hardware and semiconductor technology and can promote the development of new applications in the field of graphics and display technology in India.
