Delhi High Court has given important instructions to Delhi Police regarding the proposed demonstration of bank employees. The court has said that the United Forum of Bank Unions, Delhi State, should be provided a suitable place in the capital for peaceful protests.
A bench of Justice Amit Mahajan asked the authorities to take a decision by Monday on the request by the bank employees to provide space for the protest next week and inform the petitioner.
Delhi Police expressed objection on permission for demonstration at Jantar Mantar
During the hearing, Delhi Police expressed law and order concerns regarding allowing the demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The police said that allowing protests there could affect the law and order situation.
On this, the High Court said that the employees should be provided some place for peaceful demonstration regarding their demands. The court also remarked that employees should not have to repeatedly approach the court for permission to demonstrate.
Bank strike announced from 28th to 30th September
The petition has sought permission from the Central Government and Delhi Police to hold a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar or any other suitable place in Delhi from 28 to 30 September.
According to the petitioner, the United Forum of Bank Unions is a premier organization of trade unions in the banking industry. The organization alleges that the authorities had earlier not given permission for the strike by bank employees on 11 and 18 September.
Demand for five-day banking week
The organization has said that the proposed protest next week is being held to press its demands, including a five-day banking week. According to the petition, the organization has announced a nationwide bank strike program from September 28 to 30.
Now, following the instructions of the High Court, Delhi Police and concerned authorities have to take a decision by Monday on the request to provide alternative places for peaceful protest.
