Automobile Desk: The demand for electric vehicles is gaining momentum rapidly in the Indian automobile market. The sales figures for August 2026 have confirmed that the trend of EVs in the country is changing significantly. The most special thing of this month was that Mahindra's premium three-row electric SUV XEV 9S took the title of the country's best-selling electric car, leaving behind the long-dominating Tata Punch EV.
Difference of only 78 units in exciting competition
If we look at the sales figures, there was a tough competition between Mahindra XEV 9S and Tata Punch EV for the first place. Mahindra dispatched a total of 4,508 units of its XEV 9S to dealerships in August, while Tata Motors supplied 4,430 units of the Punch EV. There was a very slight difference of only 78 units between the two vehicles. Ever since Mahindra started the delivery of this luxury car in January this year, its demand is continuously increasing. While 4,131 units were sold in July, it saw a monthly increase of about 9.1 percent in August.

Tata Motors' overall dominance continues

With a starting price of Rs 9.79 lakh, the Punch EV continues to be the preferred choice for budget buyers.
Tata's popular Nexon EV stood at the third position with a figure of 3,975 units, whose annual sales increased by 44 percent. Apart from this, five Tata vehicles were included in the top-10 list. Among these, the recently launched Harrier EV (2,103 units) was ranked fifth, Sierra EV (1,930 units) was ranked seventh and Tiago EV (1,730 units) was ranked ninth. Including these five models, Tata supplied a total of 14,168 cars in August.
Performance of MG, Vinfast and other models of Mahindra
Other companies also registered their presence in the top-10 EV sales chart. MG Windsor EV stood fourth with sales of 3,705 units, although its sales declined by about 18 percent compared to last year. At sixth position was Mahindra's XEV 9e, whose 2,001 units were sold. Vietnamese carmaker Vinfast's Limousine took eighth place with 1,901 units. At the same time, Mahindra BE 6 registered sales of 1,696 units and managed to achieve tenth position with an annual growth of 9 percent.
