Six women volunteers of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) who were detained by Assam Police while traveling to attend the party's first regional volunteers' meeting in Guwahati were released later on Sunday, officials said.
However, several CJP leaders and workers, including co-convenor and chief spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka, remained in detention, prompting the party to demand their immediate release.
The detentions came amid heightened tension surrounding the CJP's organizational meeting in Assam, which was aimed at connecting with volunteers and expanding the party's activities in the Northeast.
The meeting was initially planned at Assam Shree Parshuram Seva Sadan in Athgaon but was later shifted to Chowdhury Tila, opposite the Assam Secretariat. CJP organizers alleged that pressure was exerted on the original venue, forcing them to relocate the programme.
Ranka, who had reached Guwahati on Saturday, was among those detained by police on Sunday morning before the meeting could begin. Reports put the number of detained CJP workers at more than 30, including four members of the party's central committee, although the organization claimed that more people had been taken into custody. The exact number could not be independently verified.
Before his detention, Ranka alleged that the Assam government was attempting to prevent the CJP from raising issues concerning government schools, land, forests and water. He also alleged that the party was facing restrictions over its proposed outreach to local residents and volunteers.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke alleged that Ranka and other members of the party team had been taken to an undisclosed location. He further claimed that lawyers seeking access to the detained workers were being denied permission to meet them.
Dipke demanded the immediate release of those still detained and said he would travel to Assam with other party members if Ranka was not released.
The CJP had planned to meet local volunteers and visit schools and families in Assam, including people concerned about the revision of electoral rolls.
The Assam Police had not issued a detailed public statement explaining the grounds for the detentions in the reports available so far.
