Lucknow. Bharatiya Janata Party has accelerated the process of selection of candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. The core committee meeting of UP BJP is proposed on Monday, in which the names of possible candidates for 8 Rajya Sabha seats will be brainstormed. After the meeting, a panel of contenders will be prepared and sent to the central leadership of BJP for the final decision.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak along with senior officials of the state organization including BJP State President Pankaj Chaudhary and Organization General Secretary Dharampal Singh are likely to attend the proposed meeting.
The main agenda of the core committee meeting will be the selection of candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections. The state leadership will discuss the names of different possible contenders for 8 seats of Rajya Sabha. According to sources, there is a plan to prepare a panel of three names for each seat. In this way, after discussing the possible names at the state level, the panel will be sent to the central leadership of BJP. The central leadership will put the final seal on the names of the candidates.
The names of potential contenders along with organizational equations are likely to be considered in detail in the meeting. In such a situation, the eyes of political circles will be focused on the core committee meeting and the decision of the central leadership regarding which faces BJP fields for Rajya Sabha.
According to the program announced by the Election Commission, biennial elections are to be held on 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and one in Uttarakhand. Apart from this, by-election will be held for a vacant Rajya Sabha seat of West Bengal. Voting for all seats is scheduled for October 16. The tenure of a total of 11 Rajya Sabha members from Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand is ending in November 2026. For this reason, elections are being held for these seats.
Notification for Rajya Sabha elections will be released on September 29. Candidates will be able to file nomination till 6th October. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on October 7, while names can be withdrawn till October 9. Voting will take place on October 16 from 9 am to 4 pm. If necessary, counting of votes will start from 5 pm on the same day. The entire election process is to be completed by October 19.
