New Delhi, September 28 (IANS). The scope of digital connectivity in India is continuously increasing. According to data released by the government on Monday, the number of broadband subscribers in the country increased from 1,094.48 million by the end of July 2026 to 1,101.21 million by the end of August 2026. During this period, a monthly growth of 0.61 percent was recorded in broadband subscribers.
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data also shows that 1.583 crore consumers applied for mobile number portability (MNP) during August. The number of active wireless (mobile) subscribers in August, based on Peak Visitor Location Register (VLR), stood at 1,207.59 million.
Wireline services also recorded positive growth. While the number of wireline subscribers was 48.01 million at the end of July 2026, it increased to 48.45 million by the end of August. During this period, there was a net increase of 4.4 lakh in wireline subscribers and the monthly growth rate was 0.93 percent.
Wireline tele-density has also increased in the country. It increased from 3.36 percent in July to 3.39 percent in August. At the end of August, wireline tele-density in urban areas stood at 8.34 percent, while in rural areas it was recorded at 0.58 percent.
Urban consumers accounted for 89.08 percent of the total wireline customers, while 10.92 percent customers were connected to rural areas. This clearly shows that the expansion of wireline services is still mainly concentrated in urban areas.
According to the data, the combined share of public sector service providers like BSNL, MTNL and APSFL stood at 16.05 per cent in the wireline market at the end of August.
Meanwhile, TRAI has also recently launched the Digital Connectivity Rating (DCR) platform. This platform will provide consumers with information related to the quality of digital connectivity of homes and offices. Along with this, a mobile app has also been launched, through which digital connectivity can be tested.
TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti said, “Through this platform, consumers will be able to view the digital connectivity rating of any rated property and also verify the certificates. This will provide people with reliable information about the quality of network, internet and digital services while choosing a home or office. It will also make it easier to access calls, downloads and online services.”
