26-year-old Neeru, hailing from Haryana, won the gold medal with a score of 28 and left behind the previous Asian record of 24. Neeru became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in the trap event of the Shotgun World Cup held in Italy in July. Neeru's victory came after she had already helped India win a silver medal in the women's trap team event in the competition. Her recent success is all the more special because before this no Indian female trap or skeet shooter had won an individual medal in the Asian Games.
Randhir Singh won a historic individual gold medal for India in the men's individual trap event at the 1978 Games, while Ronjan Sodhi won the gold medal in the men's double trap individual event at the 2010 Games. Neeru entered the final as joint leader after topping the qualification round with Qatar's Ray Basil with 118 points. This score was also a record for the Games for qualification.
