New Delhi. Sandeep Mistry, wanted in the multi-crore scam case related to Punjab National Bank (PNB), was extradited from UAE to India after which the CBI arrested him. Sandeep Mistry is a close associate of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi. After arresting Sandeep Mistry, CBI took him to the court from where he has been sent to judicial custody till October 6. Sandeep Mistry had worked as a director of a Hong Kong-based company of Nirav Modi. In July 2026, a red notice was issued against Sandeep through Interpol.
Sandeep Mistry is accused of being an important link between different companies of Nirav Modi. After the Interpol notice was issued, UAE officials traced the location of Sandeep Mistry and arrested him. The CBI, with the help of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and Home Ministry, deported him to India and arrested him after landing at Mumbai airport. This is a major success for CBI in the PNB scam case. Before this, the way for Nirav Modi's extradition to India has also been almost cleared. Nirav Modi's appeal in the European Court of Human Rights was rejected in July.
Earlier, on March 26 this year, the London High Court had rejected another petition of Nirav Modi in which he had appealed to reopen his case against extradition to India. Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi are accused of fraud of Rs 6400 crore from PNB. After this scam came to light, both Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi fled the country. CBI had issued a Red Corner Notice against Nirav Modi, after which he was arrested by the London Metropolitan Police in the year 2019. The process of extradition of Mehul Choksi is also going on and he is currently lodged in a Belgian jail.
