Regarding the meeting, CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby said that the meeting will focus on ways to run a comprehensive campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Baby said, “Gyanesh Kumar has tampered with the functioning of the Election Commission. There will be a discussion on how he can be immediately removed from the post of Chief Election Commissioner and how the movement can be carried forward under the banner of India Bloc, while independent movements and activities can also be carried out by different political groups.”
He referred to the ongoing protests by Left parties and said the issue would be discussed in the India Bloc meeting.
“For example, our agitation of the five left parties is still going on. Yesterday we protested in front of the Nirvachan Sadan. We have called for a nationwide agitation till October 2. In this meeting we will discuss how these various agitations can be used to achieve the goal,” he said.
Meanwhile, National Conference MLA Nazir Ahmed Gureji said the main issue facing the opposition alliance is the SIR process and concerns related to the Election Commission.
“The India Block meeting is about SIR. There is no doubt that a very serious allegation has been made and it has not been made by any outsider,” Gureji said.
He said that public trust in the Election Commission is essential for the functioning of democracy.
He said, “If the Election Commission of this country is biased or does not work the way it should, then people will lose trust in it and once that trust is lost, faith in democracy will also be lost.”
