Tamil Nadu Newborns To Get Gold Coin From State Govt

Tamil Nadu has launched a unique welfare scheme under which eligible newborn babies delivered in government hospitals and primary health centres will receive a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring.

The scheme, called Thaai Maaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, was formally launched in Madurai on September 28 and carries an annual budget allocation of Rs 755.83 crore.

Who Will Get The Gold Ring?

The scheme is meant for babies born in government hospitals and primary health centres across Tamil Nadu.

To qualify, the mother must be a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu, while the pregnancy must have been registered under the state’s Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation system.

An RCH ID is also required.

The benefit is available irrespective of whether the newborn is the family’s first child or a subsequent child. There is also no restriction based on the baby’s gender.

Each Baby Gets 1 Gram Of 22-Carat Gold

Every eligible newborn will receive a ring containing one gram of 22-carat gold.

Each ring will carry a unique serial number and will be supplied in tamper-proof packaging.

The scheme is based on the traditional Tamil custom of “Thaai Maaman Seer”, where the maternal uncle presents gifts to a newborn. Under the new programme, the state government is taking on that symbolic role.

Scheme Applies From June 22

The gold ring scheme is not restricted to babies born after its formal launch.

Tamil Nadu has made the benefit applicable retrospectively to eligible babies born from June 22, 2026.

For babies born between June 22 and September 27, the government has established distribution centres across the state to clear the backlog.

For eligible babies born after the launch, the ring is expected to be provided when the mother and newborn are discharged from the government healthcare facility.

1.28 Lakh Gold Rings Already Procured

The Tamil Nadu government has initially procured around 1.28 lakh gold rings for distribution.

The first batch is intended to cover eligible newborns while the state prepares for a larger rollout of the programme.

The government has made provisions for approximately 4.41 lakh rings over a year, based on the expected number of eligible deliveries at government healthcare facilities.

Rs 755.83 Crore Annual Allocation

Tamil Nadu has allocated Rs 755.83 crore every year for the scheme.

The actual cost of procuring the rings can vary depending on gold prices.

The state records several lakh births annually, with a substantial proportion taking place in government hospitals and primary health centres.

Why Is Tamil Nadu Giving Gold To Newborns?

The scheme is intended to celebrate childbirth, honour motherhood and encourage families to choose government healthcare facilities for delivery.

The government also sees the programme as a way of strengthening confidence in public healthcare institutions and encouraging institutional deliveries.

For eligible families, the gold ring provides a tangible benefit at the time of childbirth while also carrying a cultural significance linked to the traditional role of the maternal uncle.
