Afghanistan World Cup 2027 Schedule: Full Fixtures

Afghanistan will enter the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 as one of the teams that no opponent can afford to take lightly.

Over the years, Afghanistan have built a reputation for playing fearless and spirited cricket. Their rise at the international level has been remarkable, and their performances at major tournaments have repeatedly shown that, on their day, they can surprise even the strongest teams in world cricket.

The 2023 ODI World Cup was the clearest example of that progress. Afghanistan defeated some of the biggest names in the tournament and came close to reaching the semi-finals.

Four years later, they will return to the World Cup with another opportunity to challenge the established giants.

Afghanistan Surprised the Cricket World in 2023

Afghanistan produced their best-ever ODI World Cup campaign in India in 2023.

Before that tournament, Afghanistan had managed only one victory across their previous two ODI World Cup appearances.

But everything changed in 2023.

Afghanistan won four of their nine matches and finished sixth in the standings.

Their first major statement came against defending champions England in Delhi. Afghanistan defeated England by 69 runs to produce one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

They then created more history against Pakistan in Chennai, chasing 283 with eight wickets in hand to register their first ODI victory over Pakistan.

Afghanistan also defeated Sri Lanka and Bangladesh during an impressive campaign.

They even came extremely close to another famous victory against eventual champions Australia. Afghanistan had Australia struggling at 91/7 while defending 291 before Glenn Maxwell produced an extraordinary unbeaten 201 to rescue Australia.

Afghanistan eventually missed the semi-finals, but their four victories and sixth-place finish showed just how far the team had progressed.

Afghanistan Can Surprise Any Team on Their Day

Afghanistan’s biggest strength has often been their fighting spirit.

They possess quality spin bowling, talented batters and players who have gained valuable experience in international cricket and major T20 leagues around the world.

More importantly, Afghanistan have already shown that reputation alone means very little once they step onto the field.

England and Pakistan discovered that in the 2023 World Cup.

That makes Afghanistan a dangerous opponent in 2027. They may not enter the tournament with the same historical record as some traditional cricketing powers, but their recent World Cup performances mean no team can comfortably overlook them.

Afghanistan Start World Cup 2027 Against Pakistan

Afghanistan have been placed in Group A alongside India, Australia, Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Qualifier A.

Their campaign begins with a major Asian contest against Pakistan on 8 October 2027 in Tshwane.

Afghanistan then travel to Bulawayo, where they will face co-hosts Zimbabwe on 11 October.

Their third match will be one of their toughest assignments of the Group Stage as they face India on 14 October in Tshwane.

Afghanistan will then take on defending champions Australia on 18 October in KuGompo City.

Their final Group Stage match will be against Qualifier A on 21 October, also in KuGompo City.

Afghanistan Group Stage Schedule

Date Match Venue
8 October 2027 🇵🇰 Pakistan vs Afghanistan 🇦🇫 Tshwane
11 October 2027 🇿🇼 Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan 🇦🇫 Bulawayo
14 October 2027 🇮🇳 India vs Afghanistan 🇦🇫 Tshwane
18 October 2027 🇦🇺 Australia vs Afghanistan 🇦🇫 KuGompo City
21 October 2027 🇦🇫 Afghanistan vs Qualifier A KuGompo City

What Will Afghanistan’s Super 7 Schedule Be?

Afghanistan’s situation is different from India, Australia, Pakistan, England, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Afghanistan are not pre-seeded for the Super 7, so they do not have a fixed Super 7 schedule yet.

If Afghanistan qualify and a pre-seeded team fails to do so, Afghanistan will take the Super 7 position allocated to the pre-seeded team they replace. Their six Super 7 fixtures will therefore depend on the final Group Stage standings.

The top three teams from each group will qualify for the Super 7, along with the better fourth-placed team across the two groups.

For Afghanistan, the first job is simple: perform strongly enough in a difficult Group A to secure a place in the next round.

World Cup 2027 Semi-Finals and Final Dates

Once the Super 7 is complete, the top four teams in the standings will qualify for the semi-finals.

Stage Date Venue
🏏 Semi-Final 1 17 November 2027 Cape Town
🏏 Semi-Final 2 18 November 2027 Tshwane
🏆 Final 21 November 2027 Johannesburg

If Afghanistan qualify for the Super 7, finish among the top four and then win their semi-final, they will reach their first-ever ODI World Cup Final, scheduled for 21 November in Johannesburg.

Afghanistan’s journey will begin against Pakistan on 8 October in Tshwane. From there, a difficult Group A featuring India and Australia will test just how far this spirited side has progressed.

But if their 2023 campaign taught the cricket world anything, it is that Afghanistan should never be underestimated. On their day, they have already proved they can surprise almost any opponent.
