Support for regional connectivity and industrialization of aviation
As part of their ongoing preparations, Mahindra and Embraer are working with the Government of Maharashtra and have selected Nagpur as the final assembly line for the production of Embraer C-390 Millennium aircraft in India. If the Embraer C-390 Millennium is selected by the Government of India and ordered under the IAF's MTA programme, the proposed center will support the local integration and industrialization of the aircraft in India. These companies are working closely with the Government of Maharashtra to finalize the relevant process with the aim that if these partners get the programme, the necessary industrial infrastructure can go ahead at a faster pace.
Committed to building technology capabilities
Vinod Sahay, Group Executive Board Member, Mahindra Group, explained, “Mahindra is committed to building a globally competitive aerospace ecosystem in India and building meaningful manufacturing and technology capabilities that contribute to the country's aspirations of a self-reliant India. As we work with Embraer for the C-390 Millennium, we are building the industrial ecosystem needed to support this program at scale. Nagpur provides an excellent opportunity for such a capability, and we appreciate the speedy approval of the land in Nagpur.” And we are very grateful to the Government of Maharashtra for helping with the related requirements. Of course, all these preparations are dependent on the selection of the C-390 Millennium by the Government of India and the order from the IAF.”
Selection of Nagpur is an important step
Bosco de Costa Jr., President and CEO Embraer Defense and Security said, “Embraer is delighted to deepen its partnership with Mahindra as we advance our preparations to bring the industrial capabilities of the C-390 Millennium to India. The selection of Nagpur as a potential location for the integration hub is an important step towards building a strong, long-term aerospace ecosystem in the country.”
We welcome the support of the Government of Maharashtra and look forward to working closely with our partners to strengthen India's indigenous aerospace and defense capabilities, should the C-390 Millennium be selected for the Indian Air Force programme.”
As per Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat objectives
The proposed Nagpur connectivity center will be a state-of-the-art hub in India that will bring to the country expertise in aircraft connectivity, systems integration, product engineering, local supply chain development and more. The partnership intends to phase-in Indian aerospace companies into the C-390 Millennium ecosystem to provide manufacturing, after-sales service, training and life-cycle support in line with the Government of India's Make in India and Self-reliant India objectives, depending on the program's contract award.
Signing of strategic cooperation agreement
Embraer and Mahindra signed a strategic cooperation agreement in October 2025, building on their earlier MoU signed in February 2024, to jointly advance the C-390 Millennium for the IAF's MTA programme. The agreement envisages cooperation on industrialization, local manufacturing, connectivity, supply chain development and MRO initiatives in India. In February 2026, the companies also announced plans to work towards establishing a C-390 Millennium MRO capability in India, should the aircraft be selected under the MTA programme.
The aircraft has a load carrying capacity of up to 26 tonnes
The C-390 Millennium is a multi-role military transport aircraft designed to perform a variety of missions, including troop and cargo transport, airdrop missions, medical assistance, search and rescue, firefighting, and emergency humanitarian missions. The aircraft has a payload capacity of up to 26 tonnes and is designed to take off and land from temporary or unpaved runways.
The proposed industrialization program will leverage Embraer's expertise in aerospace engineering and aircraft manufacturing along with Mahindra's established manufacturing capabilities and vast Indian industrial ecosystem. The companies will continue to hold discussions with the Government of India, the Indian Aerospace Industry and the Government of Maharashtra as they move forward with preparations for the event.
