Congress has appointed Pargat Singh as the new president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee i.e. PPCC. According to the official notification issued by the party, his appointment will come into effect with immediate effect. Earlier, Amarinder Singh Raja Warding had resigned from the post of Punjab Congress President. Congress has also acknowledged Vading's contribution during his tenure. Pargat Singh has also been recognized as a former Indian hockey captain and Olympian.
He entered active electoral politics from the 2012 Punjab Assembly elections. At that time he contested the election from Jalandhar Cantt seat on Shiromani Akali Dal ticket and won. After this he has been continuously representing this assembly constituency.
Left Akali Dal and joined Congress
Pargat Singh's association with the Akali Dal ended in 2016, when he was suspended from the party. After this he joined Awaaz-e-Punjab Front. Former cricketer and leader Navjot Singh Sidhu and many other leaders were included in this forum. Pargat Singh later joined Congress and won from Jalandhar Cantt on Congress ticket in the 2017 assembly elections.
Retained Jalandhar Cantt seat in 2022 also
Pargat Singh also won from Jalandhar Cantt seat in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. In this way he has been continuously winning elections from this area. While in Punjab politics, he maintained his activism on sports, administration, farmers and many issues related to the state.
Had handled many ministries in Channi government
In September 2021, Pargat Singh was made a minister in the government of then Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. He was given the responsibility of several departments including school education, higher education, sports and youth affairs and NRI affairs. He remained a minister in the Punjab government till March 2022.
Got important responsibility before 2027 elections
Pargat Singh has got the command of Punjab Congress at a time when preparations for the 2027 assembly elections are progressing. Now he will have the responsibility of leading the party organization in the state and taking forward the preparations of the Congress for the upcoming elections. This change has come as a change of leadership in Punjab Congress after the resignation of Raja Vading.
There is no change in the election committees at present
According to the official information of Congress, the working chairpersons, chairpersons and co-chairpersons of various election related committees in Punjab will continue to work on their existing posts. That is, the face of the State Congress President has changed, but the existing responsibilities of these election related committees have been retained for the time being.
