British Airways' Chicago-bound flight BA295 suddenly declared a general emergency (Squawk 7700) during flight on Monday. The incident occurred when the aircraft was flying at an altitude of approximately 37,000 feet over Ireland. As soon as the emergency was declared, the plane rapidly reduced altitude and as a precaution it was diverted back towards London Heathrow Airport.
According to the information, at around 11:50 am British time, flight BA295 took off from London's Heathrow Airport for Chicago, America. About an hour after takeoff, the pilot transmitted the Squawk 7700 signal in Irish airspace, which is considered a general emergency signal in aviation.
After this the aircraft descended rapidly from about 37,000 feet to a height of about 9,000 feet and decided to return safely. Under the supervision of air traffic control, the plane landed safely at London Heathrow Airport without any major incident.
At present, British Airways has not revealed the exact reason for the emergency. The airline said the safety of passengers and crew is its top priority and the incident is being investigated. As per initial reports, no passengers or crew members were reported injured in the incident.
According to aviation experts, the declaration of Squawk 7700 does not mean that the plane is going to crash. It is a universal emergency signal sent by the pilot to Air Traffic Control for immediate assistance in case of any type of technical failure, medical emergency or other critical situation.
This incident once again highlights the importance of aviation safety and emergency protocols. The real reason for the emergency will become clear only after the investigation report of the officials comes.
