Veteran screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar has denied a social media message attributed to him that allegedly criticized Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke, calling the purported statement completely fake.

Akhtar took to X on Monday to clarify that he had neither criticized CJP nor made disparaging remarks about Dipke.

“I, Javed Akhtar want to tell everyone that the fake message on the social media that I have criticized CJP and run down Abhijeet Dipke is as fake as fake can be,” he wrote.

Reacting to the circulation of the message, Akhtar questioned why those opposing Dipke and CJP would seek credibility by attributing statements to him.

“I am surprised that those who are opposing Dipke and CJP need to borrow credibility from someone like me!! Yeh Haalut hogayee hai??? Sad,” he added.

The fake message circulating on social media purportedly claimed that Akhtar had criticized Dipke and the CJP, described Dipke as a “puppet” of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and accused the party of pursuing an anti-BJP agenda. Akhtar has rejected the message in its entirety.

The controversy comes as the CJP, led by Dipke, has launched a campaign seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The agitation began in Mumbai on October 2, when hundreds of supporters gathered at Shivaji Park despite police denying permission for the demonstration. The party has been opposing the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and has alleged irregularities in the exercise.

The Election Commission has maintained that the revision is aimed at removing duplicate, deceased and ineligible voters while retaining eligible voters.

The CJP has said it plans to expand its campaign to other cities, including Goa, Bengaluru and Kolkata. Dipke has also announced plans to return to Delhi and proposed a protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10 if the ECI does not resign.

A few protesters were detained by Delhi Police during a demonstration on October 4, according to the source.
