Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday welcomed the latest round of Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms recommended by the GST Council, terming them a major stride toward building a simpler, transparent, and citizen-friendly tax regime.
Highlighting key aspects of the recommendations—including the removal of arrest provisions, higher decriminalisation thresholds, and streamlined procedural guidelines—the Prime Minister emphasized that these decisions will significantly lower the burden on taxpayers and businesses across the country.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, PM Modi reiterated the Union Government’s commitment to improving ease of doing business and fostering mutual trust between citizens and tax authorities.
”I welcome the new round of GST reforms approved by the GST Council. The Council’s recommendations on removal of arrest provisions, greater decriminalisation and simpler procedures will have a very positive impact,” PM Modi posted. He further noted that the core focus of these reforms remains clear: faster decisions, reduced compliance costs, automated refunds, and trust-based administration.
The GST Council’s new measures aim to dismantle rigid penal measures, replacing them with automated and tech-driven processes designed to accelerate refund cycles and eliminate procedural delays. Business groups and tax experts have widely anticipated these decriminalisation measures, noting that removing harsh penal clauses will boost confidence among medium and small enterprises (MSMEs).
These reforms align with the government’s broader objective to modernize India’s economic framework, ensuring tax compliance becomes frictionless while upholding administrative efficiency.
