In the Indian bullion market today, on the morning of October 9, 2026, gold prices are seeing mixed and limited trading. The yellow metal remained near its high levels in major metros of the country including national capital Delhi and Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow amid geopolitical tensions and US dollar fluctuations in the global market. With the arrival of the festive season (Dussehra and Diwali), retail jewelery demand is witnessing strong growth. This morning, the price of 24 carat pure gold (99.9% purity) was recorded around ₹1,49,700 per 10 grams, while 22 carat gold, most commonly used in jewelery making, remained stable at ₹1,37,250 per 10 grams.
While buying gold, it is most important to understand its purity:
-
24 karat gold (99.9% purity): This is the purest form of gold. It is very flexible and soft, due to which jewelery cannot be made directly from it. It is mainly used in gold coins, gold bars and bullion trading.
-
22 Karat Gold (91.6% Purity / 916 Hallmarked): It consists of 91.6% pure gold and the remaining 8.4% metals like copper, silver or zinc are added to make it stronger. Most of the traditional jewelery in India is made in this carat.
-
18 karat gold (75% purity): It contains 75% pure gold and 25% other metals. It is stronger and is mainly used in making diamond, stone-studded jewelery and modern lightweight jewellery.

According to bullion experts, customers should take some mandatory precautions during festive shopping:
-
Checking SKIN Hallmarking: Always buy jewelery with 6-digit alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) code mandated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). By visiting BIS Care app, you can scan this code and confirm its correctness.
-
Making Charges and Billing: Different jewelers charge making charges ranging from 8% to 20% depending on the design and workmanship. Make sure to get a confirmed GST bill, in which the weight of gold, purity (carat), rate per gram and making charges are mentioned separately.
