UAE became the largest supplier of LPG to India in September: leaving America behind India-Foreign – REVOI

New Delhi, 10 October 2026: In September, UAE has emerged as the largest supplier of liquefied petroleum gas to India. UAE's share in India's total LPG imports has increased to 39 percent, whereas in the previous month this proportion was only 13 percent. With this, UAE has left America behind, which was the leader in supplying LPG to India for the last 6 months. According to the data, UAE supplied 5,47,000 tonnes of LPG in September, which shows a huge increase of 182 percent as compared to 1,93,000 tonnes in August.

On the other hand, America has been the second largest LPG supplier to India, although its shipments have declined by 58% to 3,23,000 tonnes compared to August. Earlier in August, America's share in India's total LPG imports was 53 percent, which has come down to 23 percent in September. It is worth mentioning that in late February, due to the US-Iran tension, imports from Gulf countries were affected due to the obstacles created in the Strait of Hormuz, due to which America became the main source of LPG supply to India. Now once again the supply from Gulf countries is becoming normal and fast.

According to the report, the physical market has shown greater strength than expected. The total amount of crude coming from the Gulf region (except Iran) and coming from the west coast of Saudi Arabia and the east coast of the UAE has together reached near pre-conflict levels. India imports 60 percent of its LPG requirements, of which 90 percent comes from the Gulf countries via the Strait of Hormuz. There has been a significant increase in LPG imports from Kuwait and Qatar in September.

In September, Kuwait became the third largest supplier with 1.32 lakh tonnes, while Qatar maintained the fourth position by sending 1,15,340 tonnes of LPG (76 percent more than the August level). However, the country has not imported any LPG from Saudi Arabia this month. India's total LPG imports in September declined by 4 percent to 1.39 million tonnes compared to the previous month. Other supplier countries during the period included Iran (89,000 tonnes), Oman (23,000 tonnes), Replica of Cargo (23,000 tonnes), Bern (4,000 tonnes) and Algeria (24,000 tonnes).

Energy experts believe that even amidst the tensions in West Asia, India's strategy of getting supplies from different sources will continue. Refiners will try to maintain supply from other alternative places besides the Gulf region.
