Health effects of sitting for long periods of time
New Delhi: Nowadays, working long hours in the office, constantly staring at the screen, and sitting for hours has become common. Due to these habits, the health of many people in India is being negatively affected. Doctors have warned that sitting for long periods of time can slow blood flow in the veins of the legs.
Risk of deep vein thrombosis
Nowadays people spend most of the time in front of the screen, due to which their vascular health is getting affected. Experts have pointed out that desk jobs, online gaming, and continuous watching of shows on OTT platforms keep people in one position for hours. This slows down the blood flow in the veins of the legs, which can cause problems like deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Vascular Society of India has made people aware on this issue.
What is DVT?
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition in which a blood clot forms in the deep veins of the body. This usually happens in the legs, due to which the blood flow is not normal. If it is not treated timely, this clot can reach the lungs, causing blockage of the lungs' veins. This may also increase the risk of life. Earlier it was associated with the elderly or hospitalized patients, but now this problem is being seen in the youth also.
research findings
A scientific study has found that people with prolonged sitting habits have a 24 percent higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). In this condition, there is a problem of blood clot formation in the veins. Research has also shown that sitting for long periods of time increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis.
Dr Tapish Sahu, director of the department of vascular and endovascular surgery, said such symptoms are increasing among young patients in the outpatient department (OPD), mainly due to excessive screen time and sitting in one place for long periods.
