A luxury off-road SUV called the Land Rover Defender is quite compelling. This SUV is the talk of the town for its powerful looks, rough and tough build and ability to run on rough roads. Now the price of Defender is likely to come down in India. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is reportedly preparing to produce the Defender in India through local assembly. If this happens, the starting ex-showroom price of this SUV could be around ₹89 lakh. The starting price of the currently imported Defender in India is ₹1.07 crore.

3.0-New option of liter petrol engine
The Defender coming from local assembly is likely to get different engine options. These may include 2.0-litre petrol, 3.0-litre petrol, 3.0-litre diesel and a powerful V8 petrol engine. The new 3.0-litre P400 petrol engine gets a 6-cylinder turbo unit and 48V mild-hybrid technology. This engine produces 400 PS of power and 550 Nm of torque. The current 2.0-litre P300 petrol engine produces 300 PS of power and 400 Nm of torque. While the 3.0-litre D350 diesel engine churns out 350 PS of power and 700 Nm of torque.
Specialized hardware for off-roading
The Defender gets an 8-speed automatic gearbox and a four-wheel drive system. The SUV is based on the company’s D7x aluminium-intensive monocoque architecture. It has features useful for off-roading like independent suspension, 2-speed transfer case and Terrain Response System. Select variants also get electronic air suspension and an electronically controlled rear differential. The Defender has a maximum water-wading capacity of up to 900 mm.

Defender Octa will come to local assembly?
The top variant Defender Octa may also be included in the local assembly program, but there is no definite information about it yet. The Octa is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine that churns out 635 PS of power and 750 Nm of torque. It gets a special suspension setup, revised chassis and a separate Octa driving mode.
Local assembly can reduce the burden of customs duty on fully imported cars. This may give the company an opportunity to keep the price of Defender low. But the company is yet to make an official announcement about the price of ₹89 lakh and which variant will be assembled in India.
