Nepal Flood: The water level of Budhi Gandak river in Nepal crossed 8 meters in a few minutes! Bridge washed away, now these areas are in danger

Nepal Budhi Gandaki River Flood: Due to sudden flood in Budhi Gandak river in Nepal, the risk of flood has increased in many areas. Due to the rapid rise in river water, officials have advised people to evacuate. Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has appealed to the people to remain alert.

What did the officials tell?

Officials say floodwaters washed away a bridge and a river monitoring station, resulting in loss of information about water levels. This flood occurred in Tumje area of Ward No. 6 of Chumanubari Rural Municipality in Gorkha district of Nepal. The flow of water suddenly increased due to a tributary of the river. Authorities were alerted at around 6 a.m.

Fear of river channel being closed due to landslide

The Flood Forecasting Department of Nepal Water and Energy Commission Secretariat said that there has been very light and sporadic rainfall in the area in the last 24 hours. Therefore, rain is not being considered the cause of flash floods. Based on initial investigation and satellite images, it is suspected that a landslide blocked the river's course, creating a temporary dam that accumulated water. Later this blockage broke and the water started flowing rapidly downwards. However, investigation is underway to find out the exact cause of the flood.

Water level increased by 5 meters above the danger mark

Officials said that at 6:30 am the water level of Budhi Gandak river in Arughat increased from 2.28 meters to 3.66 meters. The warning level here is 4.50 meters. At 7:50 am, the water level reached 5.01 metres, which is above the danger mark of 5 metres.

The water level of the river decreased for a while but then started rising rapidly. At 8:30 am, the water level was 6.22 meters and at 8:40 am, it reached 8.43 meters. Soon after, flood waters washed away a monitoring station and a bridge. Therefore, no other records of water levels existed.

SMS messages were sent to the people living on the river banks. The administration advised people in areas up to Benighat to move to safe places. According to officials, about 200,000 SMS messages were sent in two phases.
