Actor Zayn Marie Khan, niece of Aamir Khan, has shared images showing marks on her arms, fingers and legs a day after she was detained by Mumbai Police during a protest linked to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
Zayn was detained on Saturday along with actor Imran Khan and actor Lekha Washington at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai. The three were later released after spending several hours in police custody.
Zayn Marie shows marks after detention
On Sunday, Zayn shared a reel on Instagram in which she showed marks on different parts of her body, including her arm, fingers and legs.
In the video, she said, “Do not scare us so much that no fear is left in the first place.”
She captioned the post, “she exposes (the state) on the internet.”
The marks were shown by Zayn herself in the video. The circumstances in which the injuries occurred could not be independently established from the available reports.
Zayn, Imran and Lekha detained in Mumbai
Zayn, Imran and Lekha were among hundreds detained during police action at August Kranti Maidan and surrounding areas on Saturday.
Mumbai Police detained more than 400 people during the demonstrations, while some reports put the total number detained across the city at around 600. Police said the proposed gathering did not have the required permission.
The protest was organised in support of the CJP’s demonstration in Delhi and was linked to the group’s demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Mumbai Police subsequently registered an FIR in connection with the protest at August Kranti Maidan. The FIR reportedly includes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to disobedience of an order, wrongful restraint and unlawful assembly.
Zayn shares police van picture
During the detention, Zayn had also shared a picture from inside a police van in which she was seated alongside Imran and Lekha.
She captioned the photograph, “INQUILAAB ZINDABAAD.”
Imran also appeared relaxed in the vehicle and shared his own light-hearted social media update about the detention. Lekha later posted videos saying the group was being taken away and that they were unsure where they were headed. She subsequently said that all three were safe and on their way home.
Why was the Mumbai protest held?
The Mumbai gathering was held in solidarity with the CJP-led protest in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Police said permission had not been granted for the August Kranti Maidan gathering, while organisers and participants disputed aspects of the authorities’ handling of the protest. Reports said hundreds of people were detained as police prevented protesters from reaching the proposed venue.
The wider political dispute has centred on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Indian Express has reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised objections on at least 14 occasions over 10 months concerning certain decisions and procedures linked to the exercise. The Election Commission has maintained that differences and observations are part of institutional deliberations and that its major decisions were unanimous.
Zayn’s latest post has added a celebrity dimension to the controversy, with the actor publicly showing the marks she says followed her detention.
