'The doors of the Supreme Court are open to everyone'

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Surya Kant has taken a clear stand on the demand of Indi Coalition's protest march and meeting. The CJI has expressed his inability to meet the opposition leaders personally. They have been advised to adopt formal legal process. He clarified that he had received a letter requesting a meeting, to which he had sent a written reply and also informed him about the reasons for being unable to meet.

The CJI said that the letter was dated a day earlier. I was out yesterday, so I couldn't get it earlier. I replied last night and explained the reasons for not meeting him. Emphasizing judicial impartiality, the Chief Justice said that the doors of the court are always open for every citizen of the country. Be it a common citizen or a member of any elected body, Parliament or Legislative Assembly, anyone can file a petition following the due process. The CJI said that every citizen of the country has every right to approach the court, the court will definitely give whatever appropriate rights are required within the ambit of the law after listening to everyone's concerns.

It is clear from this statement of the CJI that instead of meeting directly in the chamber under political issues or protests, the cases should be brought before the apex court in a formal legal manner. The opposition was demanding intervention from the Supreme Court regarding the election process and the law related to election commissioners, on which the Chief Justice has made it clear that relief can be given only through a petition in the judicial forum.

On the cancellation of JPC's visit to the Supreme Court on One Nation One Election, CJI Justice Surya Kant of India said that there are comparatively more reasons in this case because there was a possibility of conflict of interest in the court in that issue, due to which we had to discuss the administrative aspect. My senior judicial colleagues and I were collectively of the view that we should avoid any situation of conflict of interest.
