Protests will no longer be allowed at Jantar-Mantars in Delhi. Three new locations have been identified for demonstrations and sit-ins in Delhi. Delhi Police has issued a new order in this regard. Under these rules, Ramlila Maidan, Burari Maidan and East Delhi’s CBD Ground have been designated for demonstrations and rallies.
As ordered by the Delhi Police, the Union Home Ministry constituted a committee to identify suitable locations for demonstrations. The committee was to examine how to provide a venue other than the existing venues for the people to voice their demands and protest.
Based on the recommendations of the committee, these three places besides Jantar-Mantar have been designated for exhibitions. An order issued by Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar said that separate orders will be issued regarding rules and regulations for demonstrations at these three places. This order is a partial amendment to the earlier standing order issued on April 28, 2022.
It should be noted that Delhi’s Jantar-Mantar has long been considered one of the main centers of protests, demonstrations and public agitations in the country. Political parties, social organizations, employees, students and other groups have been raising their demands here on various issues. Located close to the Parliament and key central government institutions, the site holds special significance for political and social activities. Protesters from across the country have come here to raise their voices. Now, the government has banned demonstrations at this place.
