Rich teas are a staple in biscuit tins across the UK thanks to the classic, mild taste. The biscuits are ideal for dunking in cups of tea and have remained a favourite for decades.
Lidl – 49p
The biscuits from Lidl were light in colour and had a nice texture. However, the taste fully let it down. While they looked like rich tea biscuits, I found them far too bland, even for a rich tea, and they left an odd aftertaste. One bite was enough.
Sainsbury’s – 32p
Next came Sainsbury’s as its biscuit was too dry. The packet of biscuits from Sainsbury’s was the smallest among the supermarkets, weighing 200g rather than 300g like the others. It was a firm biscuit, and while it was sweet, I found it far too dry to enjoy.
Aldi – 49p
Aldi’s rich tea biscuits were darker in colour and tasted similar to McVitie’s. It had a much firmer texture and a distinct crunch when bitten. While it had the correct taste, I found the texture let it down. The firmness made it harder to chew and digest.
Marks and Spencer – 75p
Marks and Spencer’s biscuit came tied with a McVitie’s biscuit. I thought it had a pleasant texture, and it tasted light, delicate and even slightly creamy. It is a solid choice.
McVitie’s – £1.85 from Sainsbury’s
The brand is a favourite for a reason, and you could certainly tell it apart from many of the biscuits on the taste test. It had a nice crunch that wasn’t too firm and crumbled well in the mouth. Its texture was smooth and tasted comforting.
Tesco – 85p
At the top of the rankings came Tesco. While I thought it would be impossible to beat the brand, Tesco’s rich tea biscuits were so smooth, light and sweet that they took the crown. It is a lighter-coloured biscuit with an enjoyable, crumbly texture and creamy, delicate aftertaste. The biscuits are perfect for dunking in tea, making them my winner.
