In January 2014, the central government had provided an additional 50 days of employment, in addition to the 100 days of MGNREGA, to certain eligible Scheduled Tribe families who had received FRA land rights under the Forest Rights Act. This raises the question whether these families can still get 150 days of employment every year.

What are the changes in the new employment law?

The Central Government has implemented the 'Development of India-Employment and Livelihood Mission Act, 2025' from July 1, 2026. Under this Act, eligible rural households are guaranteed employment of at least 125 days in a financial year. Earlier, this limit was 100 days under MGNREGA. Therefore, the employment guarantee has been extended by 25 days under the new law.

How will it benefit forest rights holders?

In January 2014, the Ministry of Rural Development had directed states and Union Territories to provide additional 50 days of wage employment to certain eligible Scheduled Tribe families living in forest areas, in addition to the 100 days already provided under MGNREGA. This facility was meant for families who had no private land of their own other than the land acquired under the Forest Rights Act.

Will these additional 50 days of employment still be available?

The biggest question in this context is whether eligible forest rights holders are entitled to additional 50 days of employment even after the new law comes into effect. Under Section 5 of the new Act, eligible rural households are guaranteed 125 days of employment. However, the new employment law does not explicitly mention additional 50 days of employment.
