These days, in the world of international finance and diplomacy, heated discussions are going on on social media and global forums regarding a strange claim of Pakistan. Pakistan's Shehbaz Sharif government and its Ministry of Economic Affairs had started trumpeting that getting the chairmanship of the 'Board of Governors' of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank for the year 2027 is a huge 'historical milestone' for the country. Pakistan had termed it as its explosive return to global financial leadership. But, India's former IMF executive director and renowned economist K.V. Subramanian (KV Subramanian) has completely rejected this hollow and politically motivated claim of Pakistan. Subramaniam has bluntly said that this post is not a policy power, but only a formal protocol which is met every year on rotation basis. Let us know what is the truth of this whole matter and how the former IMF director has rubbished Pakistan's claims. What is the whole matter and what did Pakistan do? The claim matter started when Pakistan was selected to chair the Annual Plenary Meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group for the year 2027. Islamabad's Ministry of Economic Affairs and official statements trumpeted that after 1953, that is, after a long gap of about 74 years, Pakistan has got such a big responsibility on the top stage of global finance. Pakistan's Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema—who is also Pakistan's Governor at the World Bank—will take over the post. Pakistani media and government started publicizing it as a big diplomatic and economic victory and that it would increase Pakistan's prestige in global economic and development related discussions and strengthen its credibility on international forums.
"This is just protocol, no real power" – K.V. Subramaniam Krishnamurthy V. Subramaniam, India's former IMF executive director, repeatedly refuted all these claims of Pakistan on the social media platform 'X'. He clarified that what Pakistan is calling a huge 'historical milestone', the ground reality is far away from it. Subramaniam said bluntly in his statement, "Pakistan is claiming that it is returning to the top stage of global finance after 74 years. Whereas the truth is that Pakistan will chair the annual plenary session of the IMF-World Bank only in 2027. This chairmanship is purely a formal process and rotates every year. For example, this year this position was held by Paraguay, and in 2025 it will be held by Cabo Verde. This is just a protocol, it does not give the country any real policy power."
It is ridiculous to compare Pakistan with India's G20 chairmanship, said KV in his address and social media posts. Subramaniam also slammed the absurd comparisons being made by Pakistan. He said that some people and Pakistani media are trying to compare it with India's successful G20 presidency and BRICS chairmanship, which is completely a misleading and wrong comparison. Explaining the difference, Subramaniam said that when India assumed the presidency of G20, it had set a concrete agenda for global economic cooperation, climate change and development in front of the whole world. Similarly, the BRICS chairmanship gave direction to a large forum of emerging global economies. In contrast, the role that Pakistan has enjoyed is limited to simply chairing an Annual Meeting, with the hosting country not receiving any special legislative or financial control rights. Opinion of diplomatic analysts: Pakistani government is misleading the domestic public. International affairs experts and diplomatic analysts also believe that amidst Pakistan's current poor economy and serious political crisis, the government is trying to spoil the eyes of its domestic public by presenting such small and ordinary administrative events as a big success. According to the rules of the IMF and the World Bank, the opportunity to host and preside over the annual meeting of the Board of Governors is given to all the developing and underdeveloped countries of the world on a rotation basis. There is no role of any special ability or diplomatic struggle in this. K.V. After Subramaniam exposed this lie, these claims of Pakistan have been exposed at the international level and once again it has been proved that making hollow claims without facts does not improve the image of any country on the global financial stage.
