Delhi Police has sought to extend the judicial custody of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das by five more days. During the hearing, the SEM Court reserved its order on the request for extension of judicial custody.
It may be noted that Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were placed under preventive arrest on October 13 for entering the Jantar-Mantar premises without permission. Both were sent to judicial custody for five days. A petition for his release was filed in the SEM court today, and after hearing the petition, the court has reserved its decision.
Delhi Police said in a statement that on the morning of October 13, Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka, Ajinkya Shinde and 11 other CJP members entered a private compound in Jantar-Mantar, although it was removed from the list of designated protest sites. According to the police, security personnel deployed at the spot tried to stop them, but the protesters obstructed their efforts. According to the police statement, all 14 people were detained. Das, Ranka and Shinde were arrested as a precautionary measure in view of their alleged attempts to disturb public peace and violate the law, police said. His associate Ajinkya Shinde was released on bail in the case on condition of peace and good behaviour.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has registered a non-cognizable report (NCR) against unidentified persons in connection with the alleged threat to a magistrate during the bail hearing of CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka on Sunday. The CJP has alleged that the release of two of its leaders is being delayed and the guarantees of four sureties attached to bail have been rejected for unclear reasons. According to Ratna Singh, head of the party’s legal cell, the Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) informed her of receiving the threatening message.
