Poland's PM Donald Tusk will visit India from October 21: There will be bilateral talks with PM Modi, big focus on defense and trade

Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland, one of the most influential countries of Central Europe, is coming on a much-awaited and historic official visit to India from October 21. In New Delhi he will hold extensive bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This visit is going to prove to be a new milestone from strategic, economic and defensive point of view in the history of more than seven decades of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This high-level summit has remained a center of keen international interest, especially in recent years amid the growing strategic rapprochement between India and Central European countries, the changed European security landscape after the Ukraine crisis and the rise of India as a global economic power. According to the official program released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Polish Prime Minister will be accompanied by a high-level business delegation and a team of senior cabinet ministers. During the formal summit meeting to be held at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, the two leaders will comprehensively review all major dimensions of mutual cooperation. Along with this, there is every possibility of signing many important agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between the top industrialists and investors of the two countries in the India-Poland Business Forum meeting. Main agenda of bilateral talks: Partnership in defence, security and military modernization Defense cooperation is considered to be the most sensitive and strategic aspect of this summit. Poland is a key and highly active member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), while India is continuously promoting self-reliance in its defense production ('Make in India') and co-development of cutting-edge military technologies. During the meeting, there will be serious discussions between the two countries on joint research and production in the field of military hardware, modernization of armored vehicles, drone technology, radar systems and cyber defense. Polish defense companies have decades of practical experience in upgrading Soviet-era military equipment and integration of modern Western technologies, which can prove useful for many of the ongoing requirements of the Indian Armed Forces. Both sides are expected to further activate the 'Joint Working Group' in the defense sector and agree on expanding regular military exercises between the armies of the two countries. Trade, Energy and Supply Chain: Strategic partnership as well as economic and trade relations are the key pillars of this visit with the aim of taking it beyond $5 billion. At present, bilateral trade between India and Poland is continuously growing and it has emerged as India's largest trading partner in Central Europe. Both countries aim to take this trade figure above the historical level of $5 billion in the coming years. In this dialogue, special focus will be given to bringing advanced technologies of Poland to India in the field of renewable energy (solar and wind energy), hydrogen technology, green mobility and waste-to-energy. Additionally, policy initiatives will be approved to facilitate Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) by Indian companies in Poland and by Polish companies in India to strengthen global supply chain resilience in the electronics, semiconductor and pharmaceutical sectors. Poland sees India as a secure gateway to the European Union (EU) single market, while India provides Poland with easy access to the huge consumer market of South Asia. Digital Public Infrastructure and a new era of collaboration in the IT sector India's 'Digital Public Infrastructure' (DPI)—which includes revolutionary technologies like UPI, Aadhaar and DigiLocker—is being appreciated across the world. The talks with Poland are likely to focus on specific discussions on mutual linkage of fintech and digital payments networks, which will make cross-border transactions extremely simple and cost-effective for tourists, students and businessmen from both the countries. Indian IT companies already have a very strong presence in Poland. Polish cities like Warsaw, Krakow and Wroclaw have become major European operational hubs of Indian tech companies (like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL), employing thousands of local youth. During this visit of Prime Minister Tusk, preparations are being made to give a new legal framework to academic and industrial partnerships between the technical institutions of the two countries in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), quantum computing and high-level data security. Global geopolitics, Ukraine crisis and regional security Due to its location on the eastern edge of Europe, directly bordering Ukraine, Poland remains the most important stakeholder of regional peace and stability. In the confidential conversation between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Donald Tusk, there will be a detailed discussion on the geopolitical security situation of Eurasia and the Indo-Pacific region. India has consistently been advocating diplomacy, dialogue and peaceful solutions. This vision of Prime Minister Modi has been appreciated globally that "This is not the era of war." India's potential role in conflict resolution, humanitarian assistance and reconstruction efforts in war-affected areas will be considered in the talks with the Polish leadership. In addition, both countries will reiterate their shared commitment towards freedom of navigation and rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific region. People-to-People Connect: Mobility Agreement and Contribution of Indian Diaspora Apart from political and trade relations, people-to-people contact between India and Poland has also deepened rapidly. Today, there are more than 30,000 Indian communities living in Poland, which include skilled IT professionals, students, scientists and businessmen. Indian students are finding Poland as a preferred European destination especially for studying medicine (MBBS), engineering and management. During this visit, progress is also expected on the 'Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement' between the two countries. This agreement will make Poland's visa rules more accessible and transparent for skilled Indian workers, researchers and students, thereby curbing illegal migration and increasing legal talent exchange. Overall, this visit of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, starting from October 21, will prove to give a new strategic depth and economic strength to the India-EU partnership.
