When the Indian cricket team lands in Aotearoa for a two-test series against New Zealand beginning on 19th November and ending on 1st December 2026, the wind will not be the only force vying for the best performance. Under the leadership of the captain and vice-captain (Shubman Gill and KL Rahul), the Indian batting order is getting ready to face a hostile environment. The two matches will take place in the Basin Reserve in Wellington and the Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
Although the core team features familiar faces like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, and others who made it through the Sri Lankan tour, this tour is about the players the team management decided to recall.
Six players missed the recent assignment in Sri Lanka, and they are now back in India vs New Zealand:
Jasprit Bumrah (52 Tests 234 Wickets Avg: 19.79)
Whenever the bowling attack is absent, the opposition breathes a sigh of relief. The star pacer was nursing a knee injury which was a by-product of the 2026 T20 World Cup and has had his recovery tested by a white-ball engagement against England in July. The injury has ruled him out of the red-ball action so far.
His last outing was the second Test in the recent series against South Africa in Guwahati in November 2025. And Bumrah's re-entry to New Zealand's notoriously skiddy pitches would be the ultimate X-factor.
The spin and steel of Washington Sundar (All-Rounder):
The all-rounder has had his fair share of misfortunes as an injury cover. He picked up a hamstring injury while batting in an ODI against England and missed the Sri Lanka series, giving debutant Saransh Jain an opportunity.
Now fit and back in the frame, whether or not the 33-year-old's twin utility of off-spin and lower-order batting finds a place in the starting XI on New Zealand's notoriously bouncy and seaweed pitches is one of the intriguing questions regarding Gill's selection.
The number three tussle between Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal (Batter):
Few cricketers have endured a medical layoff as agonizing as Sudharsan, who missed the Sri Lanka tour after picking up a toe stress fracture in an India A assignment.
His absence created an intriguing subplot for the selectors as Devdutt Padikkal filled in as opener and scored three brilliant centuries in the series, including the two massive knocks of 167 and 117. With Sudharsan fit and eager to return to Wellington, whether Padikkal can retain the number three spot will be fascinating to see.
Nitish Kumar Reddy (10 Tests 396 Runs Avg: 26.40 8 Wickets)
At only 23 years of age, Nitish Kumar Reddy has blossomed into a valued member of India's structural plans. A left quadriceps injury picked up during an ODI series against Afghanistan has kept the left-hander out of the Sri Lanka series.
Having had a century in Test cricket and the ability to offer handy medium pace, Nitish Kumar has been a valued man by the selectors. With his leg-spin and swing bowling, New Zealand's swinging tracks would be the perfect opportunity for Nitish Kumar to repay the faith shown in him.

The long-awaited chapter of Anshul Kamboj (1 Test 1 Wicket)
Right-arm fast bowler Anshul Kamboj has had his patience tested by his rehabilitation process to make a return to first-class cricket. Making his Test debut back in Manchester in July 2025 and taking a solitary wicket, Kamboj has had to fight his way back into the selectors' hearts. His inclusion in the New Zealand tour party means the team is keeping a close eye on their quicks in domestic cricket who can hit the top of the markers hard.
Akash Deep (Fast bowler):
Few cricketers in this squad have had to endure a rehabilitation process as grueling as Bengal paceman Akash Deep's. Missing the entire IPL 2026 season, the right-arm quick had to sit out an agonizing eight months with a lower-back stress fracture.
Cricket can be a cruel game, but it rewards perseverance, and Akash Deep's reward came in the form of a magnificent Irani Cup performance, where he picked up six wickets. His hard work and determination finally paid off, and Akash Deep has been rewarded with a long-awaited red-ball recall just in time for the Southern Hemisphere winter.
The Road Ahead
As Team India sets off on its journey to New Zealand, their mix of battle-hardened veterans and eager-eyed returnees create a combustible mix. With the first ball at the Basin Reserve just around the corner, and Gill and his management tasked with creating an eleven that can beat the Kiwis, the pressure is on.
