Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could replace Ishan Kishan in the second T20I against New Zealand. Surprised? Captain Shreyas Iyer had indicated that the youngster would have to wait for his opportunity. Yet he could now get his chance in place of the world’s No. 1 T20I batter.
Kishan has looked almost irreplaceable because of his consistent batting. No player has scored more T20I runs than him this year. However, a fitness concern could force India to rest a key batter and give one of their most promising young talents an unexpected opening.
Ishan Kishan’s Fitness Could Open the Door
India won the first T20I and lead the five-match series 1-0but Kishan is understood to be carrying a groin niggle. His participation in the second match will depend on a fitness test before the game.
He has not been ruled out. However, the team management is discussing resting him if he is not fully fit. In that case, Sooryavanshi could return to the playing XI against New Zealand.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's IPL Form and Zimbabwe Response
Sooryavanshi made a strong case for international selection with a remarkable IPL 2026 campaign for Rajasthan Royals. He finished as the tournament’s highest run-scorerwinning the Orange Cap with 776 runs in 16 matches at a staggering average of 48.50 and an unbelievable strike rate of 237.30.
After a tough debut against England, where he scored 14, Sooryavanshi managed just 42 runs across his first three T20Is. However, he responded strongly in the following series against Zimbabwe.
He finished that three-match series with 151 runs at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 196.10topping the run-scoring charts. His performances included a maiden T20I fifty in the opener and 81 off 49 balls in the final match.
Those performances strengthen the argument that Sooryavanshi deserves opportunities to build on his international experience. His continued absence, including against weaker opposition, has raised questions about how India are using the young batter.
Kishan’s absence would still be a setback. Sooryavanshi’s possible return depends on the fitness assessment and whether the management decides to give Kishan more time to recover.
