India stakes for UN Security Council seat

India has made maritime security and Artificial Intelligence (AI) the main focus of India's bid to get a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2028-29. During a high-level discussion in the Security Council, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni stressed that the focus should be on making shared maritime areas more secure rather than making them the center of conflict.

India is contesting next year for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, whose term will begin in 2028. Voting for this will be held in June next year, in which there will be a contest between India and Tajikistan for the sole seat in the Asia-Pacific group category.

India's Permanent Representative Harish Parvathaneni said, 'India has considered AI (Artificial Intelligence) and maritime security as important priorities for its candidature to the Security Council for 2028-2029. Our objective is clear – technology should strengthen human security, not weaken it. It should expand opportunity, not inequality, and it should make our shared maritime areas more secure, not fraught with disputes.'

Harish Parvathaneni said, 'With the help of AI, by analyzing satellite images, radar and ship tracking data, a better understanding of the maritime area can be created and suspicious activities can be detected. The 'Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region' (IFC-IOR) located off India shows how important mutual cooperation and information sharing is in strengthening maritime security. “Our approach is driven by the vision of SAGAR – security and development for all in the region and our broader commitment to inclusive maritime cooperation.”
