Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday warned that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar would face trial and imprisonment over alleged “vote theft”, accusing him of undermining democracy and the Constitution.
Addressing the INDIA bloc's 'Dilli Chalo' rally at Ramlila Maidan, organized to demand Kumar's removal over alleged electoral irregularities, Rahul Gandhi described the purported manipulation of votes as an exceptionally serious offence.
“The vote theft carried out by him (CEC Gyanesh Kumar) is of the 'rarest of rare' category in legal terms,” he said.
The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha alleged that electoral manipulation had been carried out through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the deletion of 13.5 crore names from electoral rolls. He accused Kumar of acting in the interests of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, claiming that the alleged actions amounted to an attack on the voting rights of every citizen.
Rahul Gandhi also said the Prime Minister and Home Minister would have to face consequences for what he described as attacks on the Constitution and democratic institutions. Referring to alleged irregularities in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and several Assembly polls, he said the opposition would continue its fight until accountability was established.
Describing the gathering as a collective show of resistance, he said young people, farmers and workers had come together to defend the Constitution.
“No matter who you are or how powerful and wealthy you are, you are not bigger than the Constitution. The Constitution is supreme,” he said.
He further accused the Union government and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of exercising control over national institutions and government agencies.
Rahul Gandhi said he believed in brotherhood and non-violence and reiterated his message of “Mohabbat Ki Dukaan”, telling supporters that the initiative would reopen soon.
