Anne Hathaway on why Days of Thunder 2 was more than just another movie opportunity
During a recent interview with ScreenRant, Hathaway revealed a familial link to the Days of Thunder sequel. When asked if she could tease anything about the movie, The Odyssey star replied, “I just feel like I’m the luckiest girl in the world. He [Cruise] just saw something in me that he wants for this character. And I couldn’t be more thrilled.” Hathaway then added, “My family, we just love cars. We love racing. And so, I can’t believe this now gets to be my job.”
The announcement for Hathaway’s casting came in August. Paramount confirmed the Days of Thunder 2 release date on the same day. When the interviewer noted the excitement around the movie, Hathaway answered, “Don’t be late!”
In the original movie, Nicole Kidman starred as Dr. Claire Lewicki opposite Cruise. Late Tony Scott, who also directed Top Gun, helmed Days of Thunder from a script by late Robert Towne, who based it on a story he penned with Cruise. The initial critical response to the movie was mixed, but that changed over the years, with it garnering a cult following.
As for the sequel, the plot remains strictly under wraps. It is also unclear whether any other cast member from the original movie is reprising their roles in the sequel. Jonathan Levine, whose recent credits include 2019’s Long Shot and 2026’s Mr. Irrelevant, is directing the movie. Meanwhile, Will Staples is writing the screenplay. Staples previously collaborated with Cruise on Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
Days of Thunder 2 comes out in US theaters on June 2, 2028.
