The Sharad Pawar-founded NCP had a split in 2023, when some party leaders, including Praful Patel, joined the ruling 'Mahayuti' alliance in Maharashtra. Subsequently, the Ajit Pawar faction got the party name and election symbol, while Sharad Pawar's faction became the NCP (SP).

This meeting of Praful Patel with Sharad Pawar took place at a time when senior NCP leaders met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. Party chief Sunetra Pawar and her sons Parth and Jai were not present in this meeting. This meeting with Shah has taken place at a time when there are reports that the NCP leadership is not happy with the growing influence of Parth Pawar in the party.

Will both the groups merge?

Both NCP and NCP (SP) have rejected the possibility of merger of the two factions. Sharad Pawar had recently said that his party will not merge with any other party, but those who want to join are welcome.
