An important news has come out for the railway passengers of Mumbai Metropolitan Region. A major step has been taken towards starting direct suburban railway service between Panvel and Vasai. A proposal worth Rs 12,710 crore 82 lakh has been sent to the Central Government for the approximately 69.23 km long Panvel-Vasai Suburban Railway Corridor. There is a plan to build this big project under Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-3B). If this project gets approval from the Central Government, it is expected to strengthen rail connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
At present, there is no direct suburban local facility available for passengers traveling from Panvel to Vasai-Virar area. Because of this, passengers have to change trains at Kurla, Dadar or other stations to travel further. This process takes both time and effort of the passengers. The proposed Panvel-Vasai Railway Corridor will help in creating direct rail connectivity between the eastern and western suburbs. This can provide great relief to thousands of citizens who travel daily for work, business and studies. However, this project is still proposed and requires approvals and further work to launch the actual local service.
The highlights of the Panvel-Vasai Suburban Railway Corridor are as follows.
Total Length: 69.23 km
Proposed cost: Rs 12,710 crore 82 lakh
Station: 17
Elevated Track: Approx 28 km
Project: Mumbai Urban Transport Project MUTP-3B
Keeping in mind the highways, creeks and other geographical constraints, about 28 km of railway line is planned to be elevated on this route. With this, emphasis will be laid on building the track in a more planned manner.
Focus on approval from central government
The Infrastructure Committee of the Government of Maharashtra had earlier approved this project. Now a proposal of Rs 12,710 crore 82 lakh has been sent to the Central Government. The further process and the path to actual work will be clear only after getting the necessary administrative and financial approvals from the Central Government and the Railway Ministry.
