Indian Premier League (IPL)
Cricket fans were left surprised when a major update emerged about Hardik Pandya’s possible trade. Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings had dominated the discussion around his next destination. But Punjab Kings, who had barely featured in the early conversation, have emerged as the unexpected front-runners.
The biggest twist is that Mumbai Indians reportedly initiated the approach. The proposal was straightforward: Punjab could take Hardik, while Mumbai wanted Arshdeep Singh in return. The discussions then developed into a deal that would also send wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod to MI.
Now, the latest reported update suggests that the process has moved beyond negotiations.
Hardik–Arshdeep trade: Paperwork done, announcement pending
According to the latest update, the paperwork for the trade has been completed and the players’ consent documents have been submitted to the BCCI. Only the official announcement is pending.
The announcement is reportedly expected on Monday or Tuesday. Until it arrives, the development remains a reported agreement rather than an officially announced transfer.

Under the reported arrangement, the players would move as follows:
| Player | Current team | Reported destination |
|---|---|---|
| Hardik Pandya | Mumbai Indians | Punjab Kings |
| Arshdeep Singh | Punjab Kings | Mumbai Indians |
| Vishnu Vinod | Punjab Kings | Mumbai Indians |
The quality of the players involved would make this one of the most significant trades in IPL history. Hardik is among the leading all-rounders in T20 cricket, while Arshdeep is India’s leading wicket-taker in men’s T20Is. Both can change a match through their primary skills, with Hardik also offering the balance of a seam-bowling all-rounder.
Why Mumbai Indians want this deal
For Mumbai, the appeal lies in addressing two specific squad needs: an Indian fast bowler who can handle the death overs and an Indian wicketkeeper-batter.
Arshdeep could provide a strong option alongside Jasprit Bumrah at the end of an innings. His left-arm angle also adds variety, while his ability to operate with the new ball gives Mumbai flexibility across different phases.
With Mumbai reportedly considering moving on from Trent Boult, bringing in Arshdeep would help them reshape their pace attack. An Indian bowler filling that role would also give the team greater freedom when selecting its overseas players.
Vishnu Vinod would address the other requirement by adding an Indian wicketkeeping and batting option. Although Hardik is the biggest name leaving, the proposed return would give Mumbai two players suited to the roles they want to strengthen.
Punjab’s biggest gain also comes with its biggest risk
For Punjab Kings, a fully fit Hardik could make this deal extremely valuable. His power-hitting and seam bowling can improve the balance of the side, allowing the team to cover more roles without using an additional overseas slot.
However, Punjab would be giving up a proven match-winning fast bowler in Arshdeep. That makes Hardik’s fitness central to whether the trade works in their favour.
His recent injury problems are a serious consideration. If he stays fit and contributes consistently with both bat and ball, Punjab could gain one of the most valuable types of players in T20 cricket.
If injuries restrict his availability or prevent him from bowling regularly, the equation changes. Punjab would have lost a frontline bowler without receiving the full all-round contribution that makes Hardik such an attractive signing.
It is therefore difficult to name a clear winner before the players take the field. Mumbai would receive the specialist options they are seeking, while Punjab’s return would depend heavily on Hardik’s ability to remain fit and fulfil both roles.
