The rifle jammed at the last moment
According to the information, the incident took place at a Hindu temple located in Aurora, about 70 kilometers from Chicago. The accused has been identified as 19-year-old Alexandros Papourakis, who describes himself as a white supremacist and supporter of neo-Nazi ideology. The accused had entered the temple premises with weapons on Saturday. According to prosecutors, as he pulled the trigger to fire at the worshippers, his rifle jammed and did not fire. As soon as the conspiracy failed, he got scared and ran away from the spot.
Accused caught due to alertness of colleague
After the incident, the accused told about this entire incident to a colleague working with him in a fast-food restaurant. He also sent a colleague a photograph of himself wearing a tactical vest (bulletproof jacket) and an 8-page manifesto titled 'Why I fought'.
The colleague informed the local police without any delay. As soon as the information was received, Palatine Police caught the accused from outside his house in Palatine area near Chicago. During the search, an automatic rifle, loaded magazines, hundreds of cartridges and body armor with white supremacist symbols were recovered from him.
Was planning the attack for two years
Investigating officers said that the accused's manifesto was filled with extreme racial hatred against Indians, Hindus, Jews and African-Americans. He was planning such an attack for the last two years and his aim was to kill himself by killing as many people as possible.
After appearing in the court, a case has been registered against the accused under serious sections including making terrorist threats and possessing illegal weapons and he has been sent to custody till October 30.
