Amritsar News: In a major breakthrough in the campaign to make Punjab a drug-free state, carried out on the directives of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Counter Intelligence (CI) Amritsar has busted a cross-border drug smuggling and organized crime syndicate by arresting a member of the syndicate along with 20 kg of heroin, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav said here today.

The arrested individual was identified as Om Sharma, a resident of Amritsar Road, Jhabal, Tarn Taran. In addition to recovering a large consignment of heroin, police teams also seized his Honda City car (PB 46AJ 6021) which was being used for smuggling activities.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said that preliminary investigations revealed that the accused was acting at the behest of a foreign handler connected to cross-border smugglers. He said that the accused was tasked with receiving heroin consignments in the border area and then supplying them throughout Punjab.
Further delivery to other people in the state
Sharing details of the operation, he said that CI Amritsar had received credible information that the associates of the foreign handler were actively involved in drug smuggling and were receiving consignments of heroin sent through drones by their Pakistani associates in the Ajnala border area of Amritsar district and delivering them to another associate Om Sharma, who would further deliver those consignments to other people in the state.
20 kg heroin recovered from his possession
Information also revealed that the suspect, Om, had recently received a large consignment of heroin and was coming to the Sohian Kalan area on Fatehgarh Churian Road in Amritsar to deliver the consignment to another party. He said that acting swiftly on the information, the police team conducted a raid and detained Om Sharma near Dana Mandi in Sohian Kalan and recovered 20 kg of heroin from his possession.

The DGP said that the forward and backward links in the case are being established and further investigation is underway to identify the entire network and ascertain the possible links of this gang with other drug smuggling modules already exposed.
A case has been registered under the NDPS Act.
In this regard, a case vide FIR No. 48 dated 31/07/2026 under sections 21, 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station State Special Operation Cell, Amritsar.
