Sanjay Singh raised demand for cancellation of membership of rebel 7 Rajya Sabha MPs

New Delhi. The Aam Aadmi Party has termed the decision of its seven Rajya Sabha MPs to leave the party and join the Bharatiya Janata Party as unconstitutional and has demanded cancellation of their membership. Party leader Sanjay Singh, while addressing a press conference on Saturday, said that AAP will write a letter to the Rajya Sabha Chairman requesting him to disqualify these MPs from the Upper House. Citing the anti-defection law, Sanjay Singh said that no division or faction of any kind in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha has legal recognition, even if it has a two-thirds majority. He clarified that neither the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution nor the anti-defection law recognizes any separate faction or group.

He said that this step of seven MPs joining BJP is completely illegal and unconstitutional. Taking this matter seriously, AAP will demand from the Vice President and the Chairman of Rajya Sabha to disqualify these MPs. On Friday, AAP’s Rajya Sabha MPs Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal had announced that they and four other MPs were joining the BJP. Addressing a press conference, Raghav Chadha had said that 7 out of 10 Rajya Sabha MPs of AAP are ready to merge with BJP.

This development has increased the stir in Rajya Sabha politics. AAP believes that this step of the MPs is a direct violation of the anti-defection law, hence their membership should be cancelled. Now everyone’s eyes are on the decision of the Rajya Sabha Chairman. It will be important to see what constitutional action is taken on this big political dispute.
