Abhay Singh-Velavan Senthilkumar beat Pakistan to complete hat-trick of Asian titles

India’s Abhay Singh and Velavan Sentilkumar extended their dominance in the continental circuit, winning a third straight men’s doubles title at the Asian Squash Doubles Championships in Sarawak, Malaysia on Sunday.

Abhay and Velavan took down Pakistan’s Noor Zaman and Nasir Iqbal in a come-from-behind victory.

In what was a repeat of the last edition’s title clash, the Indians prevailed 7-11, 11-7, 11-2 in 47 minutes to claim the gold medal with an unbeaten run in the tournament.

Abhay and Velavan had earlier topped Pool A, beating South Korea and China in the group stage matches.

They later beat Japan’s Naoki Hayashi and Ren Makino in the quarter-finals, before triumphing over home favourties Sanjay Jeeva and Duncan Lee in the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, Velavan lost out in the semi-finals of mixed doubles competition, partnering veteran Joshna Chinappa. They went down 8-11, 11-8, 8-11 to Malaysia on Saturday.

Joshna and her women’s doubles partner Rathika Seelan also ended their campaign in the semi-finals with a 9-11, 7-11 loss to Malaysia.
