Bengal cricketer Abhishek Porel, who plays for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, has been arrested in Hooghly district in West Bengal on charges of rape, assault, and criminal intimidation. As per the police commissioner, Porel was arrested on Monday night following a complaint that he had had sexual intercourse with a medical student on the promise of marriage. Meanwhile, a case has been filed against the accused under sections 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.
The Calcutta High Court recently adjourned the hearing to September 14. The state applied for an adjournment before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, saying that police needed more time to finish their investigation. Another accused of the crime, who is allegedly Porel's friend, is still at large.
Medical Student's Allegations Against Abhishek Porel
The complainant is a young medical student from Karnataka who approached the Mogra police station on June 23. She stated that she and Porel “had been boyfriend and girlfriend for about three-and-a-half years.” They had decided to get married and went on holiday together in Europe.
The complainant said that Abhishek Porel “disowned her,” and she approached the police. In addition, the victim mentioned that about a year and a half earlier, they had a dispute that was taken to the police, but no charges were pressed.
