Adani Group: Ambuja Cements’ big step towards making green cement, strategic partnership with Lilac Limited of UK.

Ahmedabad : Ambuja Cements, the leading cement and building material company of Adani Group, has made a big announcement towards a sustainable future and environmental protection. The company has entered into a strategic partnership with Leilac Limited, a renowned clean technology company headquartered in the United Kingdom (UK). Lilac Limited specializes in providing carbon capture and electrification solutions primarily for high carbon emitting industries such as cement and lime making.

Preparation to achieve ‘Net Zero’ target by 2050
This partnership is an important part of Ambuja Cements’ broader decarbonisation strategy to help meet the company’s Net Zero target by 2050, validated by the ‘Science Based Targets Initiative’ (SBTi). Ambuja Cements is currently promoting electrification of cement production, supported by the company’s captive green power project of approximately 1 gigawatt (GW) capacity. This collaboration will reduce the cost of carbon capture, paving the way for its commercial deployment on a large scale.

The world’s largest industrial-scale pilot project will be set up in Kutch’s Sanghi plant.
Under this partnership, a commercial demonstration project will be started at the 6.6 MTPA capacity Sanghipuram Sanghi plant of Ambuja Cements in Kutch, Gujarat.

Hybrid Electric Heating: Here the integration of Lilac’s carbon capture and hybrid electric heating technology will be evaluated.

Zero Coal Target: This technology is designed in such a way that the consumption of coal in the production process can be brought to zero and flexible use of alternative fuels can be done.

7x to 8x capacity expansion: After the successful performance of this pilot project, the capacity of this plant can be expanded by 7 to 8 times, thereby capturing more than 10 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) every year.

What did the veterans of both the companies say?
Expressing happiness over the partnership, Karan Adani, Director, Ambuja Cements, said, “Moving the cement industry towards a low-carbon future requires big vision and collaboration across the value chain. Our partnership with Lilac reflects our commitment to evaluate next generation technologies that will reduce process emissions while improving energy efficiency.”

Daniel Rennie, CEO of Lilac Limited, said, “Ambuja Cements operates one of the largest and most advanced cement manufacturing networks in the world. We are extremely excited to begin this collaboration to deliver commercial-scale projects for low-cost, low-carbon cement production.”
