The Center has introduced an additional two-year service option for Agniveers after completion of their initial four-year tenure under the Agnipath scheme, Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General NS Raja Subramani announced on Wednesday.

Under the revised arrangement, 25 per cent of Agniveers will continue to be inducted as regular soldiers after four years, while the remaining 75 per cent will be offered a second engagement period of two years.

General Subramani said that after completing the additional term, Agniveers would also get an opportunity to join the regular forces, subject to their willingness, prescribed selection criteria and the operational and organizational requirements of the Armed Forces.

Selection will be based on performance assessments, including physical fitness, motivation, morale, discipline and technical proficiency. Achievements during service and organizational requirements will also be considered.

The additional two-year term will offer Agniveers more time to develop their military skills and experience. They will also receive higher pay and increased service fund benefits during this period, the CDS said.

The arrangement is aimed at retaining trained and experienced personnel while balancing the operational requirements of the Armed Forces with the performance of Agniveers.

Notably, the first batch of Agniveers is completing its four-year service tenure this month.
