Two security screeners were injured after a firearm carried by an Air India Express passenger accidentally went off during a security check at Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport on Sunday morning, officials said.
The incident took place at around 9:30 am when the passenger, a resident of Azamgarh, arrived at the airport with his wife to board Air India Express flight IX-1810 to Mumbai.
According to officials, the passenger had declared the firearm before boarding. During the mandatory weapons inspection, AAICLAS (AAI Cargo Logistics and Allied Services Company Limited) screeners were checking the pistol when it discharged a round, injuring two screeners.
Both injured screeners were taken to the New Laxmi Trauma Centre for medical treatment.
Investigation underway
The Varanasi airport authorities informed local police following the incident. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the firearm discharge.
The Varanasi Airport Director said, “During the weapons check, the passenger fired a round, injuring two AAICLAS screeners. Both were taken to New Laxmi Trauma Centre for treatment. Local police have been informed, and an investigation is underway.”
The incident occurred during the airport’s security screening process, and further details about the passenger, the firearm and the circumstances leading to the discharge are awaited.
