There has been no official confirmation regarding Xi's visit
Beijing. National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval will reach Beijing on Monday and participate in the talks of India-China Special Representatives on the border dispute with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. According to government sources, Doval and Wang will attend the 25th round of Special Representatives talks on Tuesday.
Both Doval and Wang are special representatives assigned for the border talks process. This process was initiated in 2003 to completely resolve the complex issue of the 3,488 km long India-China border.
Although it did not succeed in resolving the border dispute, officials on both sides consider this orderly process a useful tool to defuse the recurring tensions between the two countries on different fronts. This conversation is also important because it is taking place just before the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India. He is coming to attend the BRICS summit to be held in New Delhi on 12-13 September.
There has been no official confirmation about Xi's visit, but officials on both sides are hopeful of the Chinese leader's participation. On the sidelines of the summit, he may also have a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which initiatives to take forward bilateral relations can be discussed. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin in August last year. Ahead of the Doval-Wang talks in Beijing, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar again said on Saturday that peace and stability in the border areas is necessary for good relations with China.
His comments come amid reports of aggressive attitude of Chinese troops in the Upper Subansiri area of Arunachal Pradesh in recent weeks. “I think we saw a very difficult period between the summer of 2020 and the autumn of 2024, and that was mainly a result of the situation in the border areas,” Jaishankar said at the 'Economic Times World Leaders Forum' in New Delhi on Saturday.
Ultimately, he said, peace and stability in the border areas is essential for good relations, and the situation at the border will determine the status of relations to a large extent. On reports of China's increased military activities near the Arunachal Pradesh border, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on August 12 that the situation along the China-India border is generally stable at present.
